Female Athlete of the Month: Harper McCormick

Written by Xena Moore

9th grader Harper McCormick has been named the Mount Union Area High School Female Athlete of the Month for September.  McCormick won this month’s award receiving nominations from several Mount Union Area High School staff members.  McCormick was recognized this month for her contributions to the Mount Union volleyball team but also is a member of the school’s softball team.

Staff members nominating McCormick described her as a “stand out” player and praised her contributions to her team despite only being a freshman.

McCormick has been participating in athletics since she was around four years old.  When not playing volleyball herself, McCormick enjoys rooting for the Penn State Nittany Lions volleyball team.  Despite being a Penn State fan, McCormick said her favorite athlete is University of Nebraska volleyball player Harper Murray.

When asked who her biggest inspiration is McCormick said, “my mom because she was my volleyball coach, and she played in college.”  McCormick also said her favorite memories of playing sports have come from her time in club volleyball.

McCormick stated that she “needs to be above .500 for our winning [percentage] in volleyball” when asked what her biggest goal for the remainder of the year is.

Despite being a star on the volleyball court, McCormick picked a marine animal when asked about what animal she would choose if she could become any animal.  “An orca because they are the king of the sea and my favorite animal.” McCormick said.

McCormick and the rest of the Mount Union volleyball team still have plenty of games left this season.  Considering attending games and supporting the players and coaches for the remainder of the season.
